Why I Write MinnFamilyLaw.com
My name is Jason Kohlmeyer. I have been a Minnesota family lawyer since 2000, and family law is all I do. I co-founded Kohlmeyer Hagen, Law Office Chtd. in 2008. Today we have offices in Mankato and Rochester and meet with clients anywhere in Minnesota by video.
Most of the people who call my office ask the same handful of questions:
“What happens to the house?”
“How is child support calculated in Minnesota?”
“Will I have to pay spousal maintenance, or will I receive it?”
“What happens to the family business or the farm?”
“How do we protect the kids and still move forward?”
The people asking look very different on paper: a small business owner in Mankato, a family that has farmed near Worthington for three generations, two parents in Rochester trying to build a parenting schedule that works. The core worries are the same, and the answers depend on Minnesota law, not on what happened to a friend or what a website from another state says.
I built this site to answer those questions in plain English, the way I would if you were sitting across the desk from me. The guides cover divorce, custody and parenting time, child support, spousal maintenance and property division. The articles go deeper on specific situations. Everything is written for Minnesota and updated when the law changes.
You will not find pressure here. Plenty of people can handle a simple divorce with the court’s own forms, and I say so when that is true. When a case involves children, a house, retirement accounts, a business or farm, or a spouse who will not cooperate, talking with a lawyer is usually worth it, and I say that too.
