What Is Your Retirement Account Really Worth?

A $150,000 IRA or 401(k) is not worth $150,000 the way home equity or cash in the bank is. Income tax comes out before you can spend it, and sometimes a 10% penalty too. See what a pre-tax account is worth if you cash it out now, and what it is worth if you keep it until retirement.

How this estimate works

Taxes use the 2026 federal and Minnesota brackets and standard deductions. The cash-out tax is your tax with the withdrawal minus your tax without it, so a big withdrawal climbs through the brackets. It assumes no itemized deductions and no tax credits. Credits like the child tax credit can shrink when income jumps, which would make cashing out cost more.

The Keep-It Value is in today’s dollars and leaves out market gains and losses. To estimate the size of your yearly withdrawals in retirement, it assumes 6% yearly growth, 2.5% inflation, even withdrawals from retirement to age 90, single filing and today’s brackets, which rise with inflation. It treats all of your retirement income as taxable. Tax laws change.

A SIMPLE IRA less than two years old carries a 25% penalty instead of 10%. This calculator does not value pensions that pay a monthly check.
